Extremely rare and very elegant Empire-Consulate period sofa, Return from Egypt, in mahogany and mahogany veneer. Flat backrest supported by two pilaster uprights each topped with a magnificent Egyptian head in polychrome carved wood. The nightstands come halfway up the uprights and each start with a generous carved wooden palmette. The whole ending with finely carved lion's muzzles (characteristic of the work of Jean Baptiste Demay), with the mane overflowing on the armrest, absolutely remarkable in their execution. The rear console armrest support joins a connecting thimble elegantly decorated with a pellet. The sheathed front feet conclude the whole with claw feet.
These highly refined decorative elements, as well as the typical shape of the muzzle and Egyptian heads, lead to this work being attributed to the famous cabinetmaker Jean-Baptiste Bernard Demay (1759-1848).

This sofa is covered with a beautiful embossed velvet trim decorated with baskets and garlands of flowers, light green in color, in very good condition.
Slight restoration of use on the bottom of a hind foot.

DEMAY Jean-Baptiste-Bernard :
Jean-Baptiste-Bernard Demay (1759 - March 14, 1848) - Carpenter-cabinetmaker. Paris Master on February 4, 1784. He worked for thirty years in the rue de Cléry. His mark appears on the pretty flying chairs, decorated with the figure of Marie-Antoinette, which are in the Petit-Trianon.
From the start of his career, he obtained orders for the Queen's furniture. We know of many works bearing the same imprint, among others a graceful armchair owned by the Museum of Decorative Arts and two hot air balloon chairs exhibited at the Carnavalet museum.
He will be the son-in-law of Jean-Baptiste Claude Séné, the most famous, with Georges Jacob, an 18th century cabinetmaker.
