Directoire Period, late 18th century.

Charles-Joseph Lemarchand (1759-1820) .
Born in Dieppe, Charles-Joseph Lemarchand moved to rue des Tournelles until he obtained his master’s degree in 1789. He then settled on rue du Faubourg-Saint-Antoine, where he remained until 1807, and ended his career on rue du Pas-de-la-Mule. A supplier of Crown furniture, he delivered eighteen mahogany chests for the Château de Saint-Cloud in 1791. During the Empire he worked for Napoleon and his imperial castles. We can mention in particular a beautiful console supported by claws of gilded wood, delivered to the Château de Compiègne.

The vast majority of Lemarchand’s furniture is in the LouisXVI-Directoire style, most executed in mahogany wood, with simple shapes, no decoration, if not fine copper or brass chopsticks. After his death his son Louis-Edouard took over the workshop and continued his father’s activity as a Crown supplier under Charles X and Louis-Philippe.

Furniture by Charles Joseph Lemarchand is kept in the Malmaison, the Château de Fontainebleau, the Mobilier National and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs.
