Magnificent mask of Medusa, one of the three gorgons. In Greek mythology, gorgons are fabulous monsters, children of the sea deities Phorcys and Keto. They were 3 sisters:
Medusa (the only mortal), Stheno (the powerful) and Euryale.
They were represented in the form of women with hair made of intertwined snakes and sometimes equipped with wings; they lived near the country of the Hesperides, on the borders of Libya.
This plaster mask is reproduced identically to the one on display at the Glyptothek in Münich, Germany. (see link below)
